Learn Analysis

Learn

LEARN from Rick Mereki on Vimeo.
Learn is a short film just under two minutes by Rick Mereki based on the linear concept of learning. The non diegetic music constant throughout the piece symbolises the tranquillity of the journey mixed with that of the excitement of all the possible experiences throughout the world creates a sensation of excitement to an audience. The way the camera pans from one scene to the next evokes the idea that the whole world is connected in some way and that it is all out there for you to discover and that you just have to take the first step. Also the transition between different cultures of rich and poor portrays the global harmony and cohesion possible. This is enforced by the bond our main character builds with all the people who teach him these different. This is used to enforce how we can all find common ground and learn from each other being no need for any form of conflict. As well as this the short amount of time spent on each activity emphasises the vast amount of things to explore in the world. This portrays how we are tiny part of a large community and that there is so much more to life than what we believe there to be. The way the diegetic sounds of the people he meets throughout the journey are used to build on this multicultural picture that we are presented throughout the video. His enjoyment at the simplest of activity like football with less fortunate children is used to enforce the love and care we should have for all people in this world and that there is no one out there who is better than another. Throughout the whole short there is a constant range of close ups on hands and faces. The correlation between the hands performing this range of activities mixed with that of the smiling and happy faces emphasises that we do not need the new leaps of technology to have the fun and enjoy our lives. The shallow focus shots allow us to understand that the activities are the key feature throughout the short and this is what we need to focus on inspiring the audience to experiment and try new things that they once may have been scarred of doing. Another key feature is the main characters smile throughout the short. This constant happiness creates envy among an audience that they too want to be this happy, and to do that they have to go out explore and take this adventure discovering new things therefore encouraging these people to do just that. It’s a strong motivational piece as it overly emphasises how there is so much more to everything and that you need to get yourself out of the constant monotonous routines of life to experience these new things, to learn.
