DIary 08/02/12

This week in media I have continued my search for locations to use and props to use. I have however found the actors/actresses who are going to play a part in my short film. I have also been practicing filming some of the camera techniques I intend to use. This is in order to ensure that I have fully mastered them so that it can be done at its best in the final piece.

Pan Practice

In this video I have practiced an attempt I am going to use in my short of creating a pan that changes into another pan in a different scene.

Short Film Theorists

Diary 04/02/12

I have spent the last few days doing research into creating my short film. This has involved considering which actors/actresses, locations and props I am going to use in the short. I am still considering which actual locations. actors/actresses and props I am going to use however I have shortlisted most things and will be deciding at a later date. I also spent a day drawing up story boards for my short film. This gave me a good rough idea of how exactly I am going to film it and what sorts of locations and props I will need. Hopefully this means I will be able to start filming in the half term next week. This will then enable me to spend the rest of the school year editing and producing the final piece.

Short Film Proposal

Proposal

I have had several ideas on what to base my short film on. I have been set on the start to avoid an action, horror or thriller and go with something a bit more art house. This is because with my limited budget this is going to be allot more cost effective and have a more effective out come as a realistic short film. I intend to create two parallel worlds in my short film of the same person however in one they are successful and one a failure. The short film will consist of following their alternate day to day lives. I intend to really over exaggerate the differences of success and failure. However I intend to flip these representations with the successful person being alone and miserable whilst the failure is happy and has lots of friends. I am going to really focus on detail of the everyday objects and activities they take part in I am also going to focus in on the sounds of these things over emphasising on them. I have planned to shoot my short film with a canon 550d camera as this will allow for allot of shallow and deep focus filming with a HD appearance.

Diary 01/02/12

I have just started the A2 side of my media course. For this i intend to create a short film. For my first planning task I have been analysing other short films. I found that a site called vimeo.com is ideal for this as it is a video sharring site entirely for amateur film makers to share their work. I picked three videos to analyse. So far I have completed two one in an essay format and one in a power point with screen shots to analysel. My next one I intend to do as a voice over commentary. This has some limitations as it can be hard to find a location in which I can watch whilst having it quiet enough to record my voice. Apart from that I haven't really had any other limitations and everything has run pretty smoothly.

Learn Analysis

Learn

LEARN from Rick Mereki on Vimeo.
Learn is a short film just under two minutes by Rick Mereki based on the linear concept of learning. The non diegetic music constant throughout the piece symbolises the tranquillity of the journey mixed with that of the excitement of all the possible experiences throughout the world creates a sensation of excitement to an audience. The way the camera pans from one scene to the next evokes the idea that the whole world is connected in some way and that it is all out there for you to discover and that you just have to take the first step. Also the transition between different cultures of rich and poor portrays the global harmony and cohesion possible. This is enforced by the bond our main character builds with all the people who teach him these different. This is used to enforce how we can all find common ground and learn from each other being no need for any form of conflict. As well as this the short amount of time spent on each activity emphasises the vast amount of things to explore in the world. This portrays how we are tiny part of a large community and that there is so much more to life than what we believe there to be. The way the diegetic sounds of the people he meets throughout the journey are used to build on this multicultural picture that we are presented throughout the video. His enjoyment at the simplest of activity like football with less fortunate children is used to enforce the love and care we should have for all people in this world and that there is no one out there who is better than another. Throughout the whole short there is a constant range of close ups on hands and faces. The correlation between the hands performing this range of activities mixed with that of the smiling and happy faces emphasises that we do not need the new leaps of technology to have the fun and enjoy our lives. The shallow focus shots allow us to understand that the activities are the key feature throughout the short and this is what we need to focus on inspiring the audience to experiment and try new things that they once may have been scarred of doing. Another key feature is the main characters smile throughout the short. This constant happiness creates envy among an audience that they too want to be this happy, and to do that they have to go out explore and take this adventure discovering new things therefore encouraging these people to do just that. It’s a strong motivational piece as it overly emphasises how there is so much more to everything and that you need to get yourself out of the constant monotonous routines of life to experience these new things, to learn.
